Understanding Different Types of Leadership

A wise man once said, A group of 100 sheeps led by a lion can defeat a group of 100 lions led by sheep.

I personally don't know the reality but what i can derive from this quote is that leadership and guidance plays an important role.

After doing a lot of research and deep  analysis, taking help from various websites and Ai softwares here's a combination juice that we have been Known for.

Understanding Different Types of Leadership

Making you understand the concept of leadership along with the different types of leadership in simple words.

Stay tuned and enjoy reading, but before we go deep into the article let's have a look at what leadership stands for !

    Meaning of leadership

Leadership is the ability to inspire and guide others towards a common goal.

In a business or organisational setting, leadership is a critical skill for success. There are many different types of leadership styles, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

Understanding the different types of leadership can help you determine which style is most appropriate for your organisation and team.

If we just break the above paragraph then in short leadership stands for leading a group of people.

It can be anywhere, whether you are in a school or you are in a college, whether you are working in MNC or you have your own family.

Everywhere we have a leader, In school we have a class leader, In offices we have team leader and in family we have head of the family and everyone works to represent their own group and lead them.

So that's what we call leadership in society. There are different kinds of leaders as written earlier in the article.

So let's discuss each of them in detail.

    Autocratic Leadership

The first and foremost type of leadership is autocratic leadership, in this type of leadership a leader represents the whole group.

Rather than taking inputs from the other team mates the team leader takes decisions.

In autocratic leadership your views and decision doesn't matter, it's up to the leader what he does are the decisions he takes.

A good example of Autocratic leadership can be the principle of the school as he is the sole leader of the school and can take decisions on its own.

Without taking inputs and views from others.

This style can be effective in situations where quick decision-making is necessary or in highly regulated environments.

    Transactional Leadership

As by the name here we have our second type of leadership style called transactional leadership.

In this type of leadership the transaction of rewards takes place in exchange of good works.

This type of leadership can be observed in MNC and in government jobs where you get promoted for doing good work.

Not just promotion there are certain companies which arrange award ceremonies for their employees that include employee of the month or employee of the year.

This is one such type of leadership that appreciates the employees and work and urges them to work more for the company in exchange for getting a good promotion or reward.

Leaders who use this style focus on maintaining the status quo and rewarding employees who meet or exceed expectations. This style can be effective in stable and predictable environments.

    Transformational Leadership

The third type of leadership can be termed as a growth mindset leadership because here the exchange of ideas and inspiration take place.

The leader of the group tries to keep his group aligned by motivating the team mates and by inspiring them.

Transforming the mind of teammates by ideas and inspiration that's why this type of leadership is Known as the transformational leadership.

The main purpose of inspiring the team mates is to make them focus on their work rather than thinking about the result they are supposed to work with full efforts.

The leader of the group tries to remove all their doubts as a result the employees can work with their full potential and can bring a big change.

Leaders who use this style are charismatic and inspire their team to reach higher levels of success. This style is effective in dynamic and ever-changing environments.

    Servant Leadership

I personally admire this type of leadership and i believe to be one of the best from all types of leadership that we have discussed till now.

Most of the time we see that a leader tries to put his decision in front of his employees or teammates but here the exact opposite happens.

In servant leadership, the leader tries to connect with the group, the leader tries to get the input from other teammates and instead of taking decisions on its own the leader tries to get ideas from others.

In servant leadership the leader acts as a servant of teammates and puts their decision ahead instead of his own.

Leaders who use this style focus on serving their employees and supporting them in achieving their goals. This style can be effective in building trust and loyalty among team members.

    Laissez-Faire Leadership

This type of leadership can be observed in a group of people who are highly educated, experienced and skilled.

In this type of leadership the leader provides a small input regarding the work and asks the teammates to work on their own.

This type of leadership can be observed in the field of freelancing, where a leader gives a small input to the content writer and on the basis of that input the content writer writes the article.

So that could be a perfect example of Laissez-Faire Leadership. However, it can also lead to confusion and lack of direction among team members.

    Situational Leadership

Situational leadership, the type of leadership that can be observed during different situations when a team needs the leader and what does the leader do to save his team.

In simple terms it is all about the leader's behaviour and how he manages his team during crises and tough situations.

Leaders who use this style are able to assess the situation and adjust their leadership style accordingly.

This style is effective in complex and constantly changing environments.

    Charismatic Leadership

Have you remembered that quote I stated in the beginning that was what I was referring to?

In this type of leadership the growth of the team is not measured by how many skilled people you have but by what your leader's quality is.

The qualities of leaders will decide how far your group is going to go in the future.

In this type of leadership the teammates get influenced by the group leader, his attitude and way of working affects the people of that group.

Whatever the group leader says it creates an impact in the life of the teammates they follow.

Such kind of leadership can be observed in celebrities where the fans get influenced by the charm of their actor or leaders.

Not just about actors but also a point where the group people need their leader's help, this style can be effective in situations where a clear vision and direction are needed.

    Bureaucratic Leadership

One of the greatest bureaucrats of India sir Dr S.Jayshankar, if you have read or listened to him then you may have noticed the level of diplomat he is.

Personally he is one whom I admire most. The way he represents India on the global stage is just amazing and that's how he possesses the leadership qualities of bureaucrats and we call this type of leadership as bureaucrats leadership.

In this type of leadership a person has to be very clear with his words and whatever decision he is gonna take.

In bureaucratic leadership a leader is binded with a set of procedures and rules that he must take care while making any decisions.

In this type of leadership there can be a lack of flexibility as the whole team and the leader is binded by some rules and regulations.

    Authoritarian Leadership

Authoritarian leadership as by the names, here a leader of the group has the authority over his whole group and can take decisions on its own without taking inputs from other teammates.

The leader has full control over the group.

As everyone's decision is taken by the group leader the teammates feel suffocated as they can't even share their inputs and thoughts with the group leader and their decision was not welcomed as it was in the servant leadership.

This style can be effective in situations where quick decision-making is necessary, but it can also lead to a lack of trust and motivation among team members.

    Paternalistic Leadership

Paternalistic leadership is again one such leadership after servant leadership that personally I admire the most.

In this type of leadership instead of just leading the group the leader takes the responsibility of the whole group as it's children and that's why this type of leadership is known as Paternalistic leadership.

In this type of leadership the leader mentors the whole team, guides them wherever they feel confused and gives them proper directions.

Not just guidance but here the leader role is of a protector he protects the team and motivates them too.

Leaders who use this style provide guidance and support to their team, but can also be overprotective and limit their team’s autonomy.

    Agile Leadership

This type of leadership focuses on flexibility of a team and the adaptability to adapt to different conditions according to problems.

In this type of leadership the leader stays attentive and makes decisions According to the change in condition.

Such leadership can be observed in the field of stock market and investment where a leader changes his strategy with the change in market conditions.

This style is effective in dynamic and fast-paced environments.

    Visionary Leadership

Visionary leadership is a type of leadership where the leader has a vision, and the whole team supports the team by giving their 100% in their work.

In this leadership the main goal is to complete the vision that a leader has aimed for.

This type of leadership can be observed in business. For example, Elon Musk, the revolutionary man of today's society, has an aim of building a new world on Mars.

His whole company is dedicated to fulfilling that vision, they make reusable rockets and are doing a lot of things to build a colony on Mars.

This could be a perfect example of Visionary leadership.

Leaders who use this style inspire their team members to work towards a common goal and achieve success.

This style is effective in situations where a clear direction and purpose are needed.

    Inclusive Leadership

Inclusive leadership is a style that values diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.

During the lockdown this type of leadership can be observed easily where the priority is given to flexibility and comfort rather than work or money.

That can be a perfect example of inclusive leadership where the priority is given to work rather than from where you were doing.

Leaders who use this style create an environment where all team members feel valued and included, which can lead to greater creativity and innovation..

    Adaptive Leadership

In this type of leadership the leader and team are willing to change their conditions according to their situation that's why this type of leadership is known as the adaptive Leadership.

A common example of this type of leadership can be observed in stock market where the leaders changes their strategy according to market change.

In this type of leadership the leaders takes descision instantly and focuses on problem solving when the condition or situation changes.

They are not bound by traditional methods and are willing to take risks to find new solutions.

    Self Leadership

This type of leadership can easily be observed among the entrepreneurs who are their own leaders.

In this type of leadership a person follows his own ideas and tries to follow his own vision that he has set for himself.

Self leadership is the ability to himself and follow his own set of rules and regulations rather than getting in influenced with others.

Here in this type of leadership the leader alone takes the responsibility of all his actions and what he is doing. Since their is no team therefore the leader is responsible for all the descision that he mades.

This means taking responsibility for one's own actions and decisions, setting goals, and motivating oneself.

Self leadership is important for personal and professional development, and it can also be beneficial in a team setting as it encourages individuals to take ownership of their work and contribute to the team's success.

    Leadership Competencies

Leadership Competencies are the basic values or skills that a person must have in order to become a great leader in the future.

Without having those leadership Competencies a person can't become a leader, there are certain skills that a person must have, it includes the ability to lead the group.

A leader must have a great vision, he must have the ability to conquer the problems, he must have good communication skills as well as a good knowledge of that field.

Developing leadership competencies is crucial for anyone who wants to be an effective leader.

In most of the cases the leaders that we saw in our ancient society were not trained about leadership from childhood , only they started processing those habits or skills on their own.

Maybe Leadership qualities are gifted from childhood but if anyone wants to be a leader then he can join the leadership training courses.

    Leadership Courses and Training

Leadership courses and training programs are designed to develop the skills and competencies needed to be an effective leader.

These programs can be tailored to different levels of leadership, from entry-level team leads to senior executives.

Different agencies and various educational institutions organise and introduce such kinds of courses to the public, so that the public can learn something new.

Not just about courses there are certain websites and YouTube channels where you can get content for free.

In order to develop leadership qualities it's not essential to take a leadership course with just a smartphone in your hand you can access the free content available on YouTube.

Leadership training can include classroom instruction, online courses, workshops, coaching, and mentoring.
